Felipe Bastos

Age - 24

Birthday - March 21, 1981

Years Running - 8 yrs.

Where do you live and train?

Live and train in Gainesville , FL , home of the University of Florida . It is a very athletic town, with very strong teams in every sport, especially swimming cycling and running – a perfect place for a triathlete. The only thing we lack around here for perfect training are hills (I come from a mountain city in Brazil , so I really miss the mountains, and tend to get my fix racing the hilliest races I can find). I have been here for about 5 years and am in love with the city, so I am planning on buying a home here soon.

Ideal training spot, conditions, companions?

I swim with a Master’s Team, and bike most of my miles alone during the week and with the local cycling team on the weekends. I run mostly alone on a dirt road near my home, Tobacco Rd. This road has been the training grounds of many world record holders and Olympic champions who come to Gainesville to train in the winter, as we have a very mild seasonal weather here.

Sometimes I train with my girlfriend Leland Black (I am her coach), and when I go back home to Brazil I enjoy hooking up with my old training mates ( Vinnie Santana, 10 th at IMBRA and Bruno Khouri, World Champion in ’99).

Years running, cycling, or competing?

I have been in the sport of triathlon for 10 years now - 6 as a professional – and plan on being involved in it as long as I am alive.

What type of races do you prefer (i.e trail ultras)?

Triathlons - from sprints to Ironman

How did you hear or find out about Injinji tetratsoks?

From an athlete I coach in California

Your personal tetratsok of choice?

Micro for training, crew for casual

How do the tsoks work for you, and what do you like best about them?

Elimination of blisters, more “grip” when cycling / running

How have the tetratsoks changed your experience training and competing?

In the end of a tough ½ Ironman, slowing down can cost me a victory and tetratsoks have helped me keep my feet blister free and speed full!

What would you most like to accomplish athletically presently and/or long-term?

My career long term goal is to be in the podium at the Hawaii IronMan.

Favorite Quotation or Personal Motto?

“Go hard or go home”

“"Hard days should be hard, easy days should be needed."”

What inspires you to reach for more in your sport and in your life?

Life is too short to give less than 100%.

Favorite foods for training and competing?

I love barbecue chicken pizza and I also drink a bit too much Dr. Pepper. When racing, I use Hammer Nutrition’s extensive line of products to help me achieve my goals.

Favorite post race meal?

Mint chocolate chip Ice cream.

Other hobbies or interests that you like to spend your time doing?

I really enjoy gardening, as well as cooking. I also enjoy sipping coffee after going to the movies with my girlfriend.

Advice you would give to someone just starting out running or cycling, or in a new sport in general?

There are no short cuts to success. Take the time when you are just starting out to get a good, solid base, and a good idea of the technique necessary to be efficient in whatever you choose to do. Practice doesn’t make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.

Best advice you have ever received from a fellow athlete, or non-athlete?

Vinnie Santana’s “take good care of your vision and knees. Because once they go, they go.”

Personal hero or role model?

Craig Walton. He tries hard, all the time. He once told me he goes all out, in whatever he does. If he runs out of energy, oh well, he ran out of energy.
